The campaign theme for International women's day 2022 is #BreakTheBias. Either deliberately or unconsciously, gender-based bias makes the advancement for women more difficult. Knowing that there is this is not enough. Action is needed to ensure a level playing field between women and men.
What is the history of International women's day?
The International women's day has been held for over a century and the first meeting was held in 1911. There have been great unrest and critical debates among women. Oppression and inequality of women have made women more vocal and active in the campaign for change. Then, in 1908, 15,000 women marched through new York City asking for shorter hours, better wages and voting rights. Following the decision reached in Copenhagen in 1911, International women's day was honored for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on 19 March 1911. More than a million women and men participated in meetings for women's rights to work, vote, train, hold public office and end discrimination.
Do we still need International women's day?
Yes! There is no room for complacency. According to the World Economic Forum, unfortunately, none of us will see gender equality in our lives, and probably many of our children. Gender equality will not be achieved for nearly a century.
